What Does a Computer Forensics Expert Do?
The role of computer forensics expert has come to prominence due to the reliance we all now have on technology. We rely on computers for practically everything these days, even washing machines have complex computer programs running inside them these days.
Computer forensics experts won’t be much use if your washing machine is broken though. They are more concerned with the data stored in computers, networks and servers. The extraction of hidden and deleted files are put together to be used in court cases or corporate investigation cases.
The scope of digital data that can be scanned and searched through for evidence nowadays is vast. Beyond the computer, there is also audio visual data such as CCTV footage and sound recordings. Then there are mobile devices such as MP3 players and of course, mobile phones and PDA’s.
Enhancing footage, restoring audio and investigating hidden data can all be part of a computer forensics expert’s day. The main aim of the scientific process is to piece as much evidence together so that it can be used in court and stand up to the strictest levels of scrutiny. Presenting the data in a format that can be used in such situations is a skill in itself and is almost as important as the data itself. If the final presentation is illegible or has any inconsistency all of the data becomes irrelevant as the evidence will likely be excluded.
This new area of evidence gathering is only likely to grow in the future as we all integrate digital solutions even more into our lives. One thing is for sure, as technology advances so will the techniques used to catch those misusing those systems, and that is what makes it such an interesting field of work to be in.
